I'm About To Lose It Logo

An obese 50 year old guy takes the plunge into RNY gastric bypass surgery.

I’m 52 and as long as I can remember I’ve been a bigger guy. In high school I wasn’t morbidly obese but even as a fairly active person I was bigger than most everyone else. From there it only got worse as the pounds kept packing on.

Summer of 2023 I was miserable. 508 pounds. My knees and back hurt all the time. I had sleep apnea. Heartburn every night. Walking even 10 feet was something I had to think about. I didn’t go shopping. I didn’t help around the house too much because I couldn’t. I had a mini panic attack every time we went out to eat, afraid I wouldn’t fit into a booth. I WAS MISERABLE.

Two years ago today I went in for RNY in Chattanooga, TN. Insurance wouldn’t cover it and I made the decision that even if I had pay out of pocket and take out a loan (which I did) I was going to do it. Thankfully I have a super supportive wife who pushed me forward during the times I thought about backing out. So glad I went through with it.

I’m not quite where I hoped I’d be but I’m not far off. I still make bad food choices sometimes. But I make many way better choices than I once did!

In 2023 I was miserable. In 2025 I walk/jog a 5K almost every Saturday. I go on hikes. We recently spent a full day walking around a zoo. My knees are still shot but hurt so much less than they did. I don’t think about booths or airplane seats or big and tall stores. I wear the same size pants I wore in high school. I enjoy being active. I HAVE A LIFE.

So thankful for this tool!
