One of my biggest flaws is that I’m a really passive person. I will just let things happen without speaking up. Sometimes that can be a good thing…it keeps you from letting every little problem in the world overwhelm you.
But if you don’t speak up, especially for yourself, it can cost you dearly.
This applies to every aspect of your life. It’s not selfishness or “causing trouble” to stand up for yourself.
When I first started the gastric bypass process, I got a quote for the price. For reasons I won’t go into here (but reasons that boil down to crappy insurance and a broken health care system) I am having to pay for this surgery 100% out of pocket…which just sucks!
Yesterday I went to billing office to pay my first payment on the surgery and found out they were showing a price that was significantly higher than what I was quoted. I had made provisions for the original amount. I had that in hand. I did NOT have the difference in funds and was really worried this surgery wasn’t going to happen.
But I took action, worked with doctor’s office elsewhere in the hospital and they are taking care of the problem.
If I would have let it go I would have been responsible for much more. But just speaking up about this set wheels in motion to get the right payment.
Now, I know 99.99% of you out there (like anyone is reading this) would have done this without thought. But I’m such a passive person, if it was a lesser issue I might have just let it go. But I couldn’t let this go.
So I guess this is just a reminder to you, to me, to whoever, to speak up. You are not a troublemaker if you are advocating for your own health, finances, and/or wellbeing.
Advocate for yourself in everything.
