I'm About To Lose It Logo

An obese 50 year old guy takes the plunge into RNY gastric bypass surgery.

This is just a self-accountability post. It’s been a bit over 5 months since I had surgery. As I’ve said before I feel I’ve moved out of the honeymoon phase and I’m in the “real world” of it all now.

GOOD STUFF

  • I’m still losing weight. My goal is to be healthy but the first part of that is losing weight. I’m still losing about 1 to 2 pounds a week…occasionally more than that. More than anything I’m happy with that!
  • I’m getting exercise. I go to the gym (some). I’m more active around the house. I get up from my desk from time to time and go outside for a walk.
  • Overall I’m eating much better. Part of this is forced by the surgery, but not all of it. I still make choices and I’m making much better ones over all.
  • I’m feeling better. My knees are worn out but still they feel better overall.
  • I’ve been really good overall about tracking my food and trying to hit my daily goals.
  • I’m more comfortable in public in general. I’m still a very big guy. But just the fact that I can, for example, sit comfortably in most booths, is a good feeling.
  • My clothes sizes are going down. I started in tight 7XLT. I’m comfortably wearing 5XLT now and I just ordered a 4XLT I think will fit fine.

BAD STUFF

  • I eat too much slider/bad food still. I was hoping I’d be better at this part. I don’t eat it anything like I did at one point, mostly because I can’t eat the quantity. I did so good, 100% teetotaler for the first 3 or so months. But I’ve noticed more and more a cookie here, a very small handful of chips there. I have to really mind this…it’s the stuff that got me where I am and it’s the stuff that can get me back there if I’m not really careful.
  • I could use more exercise/gym time. At first I was going to the gym Saturday and Sunday mornings with the idea of eventually going more after work. Instead I’ve dropped down mostly to just Saturday mornings. I knew I would be limited with my knees which need replacing, but I hoped I’d get more in than I do.
  • I’m worried that left to my own devices I would slip back in to all of my old habits (food, exercise, etc.) I really hope I don’t as I feel like this is my last ditch effort.

Overall though, I’m really proud of myself and how far I’ve come! 160+ pounds down is a win in any book!
