On Monday, 3 days from today, I start my 2 week prep diet for Reux-En-Y gastric bypass surgery. Two weeks from Monday is the day (barring any unforeseen circumstances/issues.)
My emotions are all over the board. I’m nervous. I’m excited. I’m hopeful. I’m fearful.
It seems like it has taken forever to get to this point…and now it seems like it’s barreling down on me like a freight train!
For the last month+ I’ve been working on making health changes that will go along with this big life change. I started drinking more water…a lot of water….I started drinking water at all. I started recording every thing I ate, which led me to start thinking more about carbs, calories, protein, sugar etc. I have done really well with that and with just those and a few other changes (replacing crazy calorie breakfasts with protein shakes, for example) I’ve lost about 22 pounds of the 25 I’m supposed to lose before surgery. I was really leaning into the whole healthier life…
That was until last Friday. Suddenly the switch flipped and all I could think of was “this may be the last time I get to have this or that.” I’ve not totally abandoned my newer healthy ways, but I’ve definitely reverted back to some less-than-healthy ways!
Maybe this is all normal. From what I’ve ready online I think it probably is. I guess we will find out on Monday if I can lean into the 2 week diet.
As bad as my habits and relationships are with food, I still think that maybe this will all just work. I’m not completely sold. I’ve told my wife for a long time that I wont believe this is happening until I wake up from the surgery.
But I do think I can do this. It wont be easy. It took me years of mindset change and a lot of study on this surgery to realize it is a tool, not a crutch. It’s not the easy way out. But it is a highly successful tool.
And I have to do this. It’s almost time to do this.
(With a big fearful breath) Let’s do this.
