The more I go through this process, the more I realize how extremely important support is on this journey. I knew going in it was going to be a big deal, but on the other side of the surgery I see more and more each day how it can be a “make or break” for success.
I wouldn’t have even started this journey if I didn’t have the support of my wife and family. My wife gave me nudges (without being pushy) when I would hem and haw about it.
In the pre-op days leading up to the surgery the diet to prepare was pretty miserable, but she would give encouragement. Now that I am post op, I see in so many ways, how her support is pivotal. This isn’t just a life change for me but for our family.
We have not been “cook at home” people historically and would usually eat out something fast and/or unhealthy. So that has been a big adjustment for her. In addition I didn’t really factor in the fact that for six weeks I can’t lift but a few pounds. This means she’s taking out the trash, rolling the can to the road, and things like that, for me right now. She’s doing a lot!
In my personal situation, it helps that she is a nurse and has coached me through aches, pains and questions along the way. But also as my wife, she lifts me up on the hard days (and there are hard days). She’s got my back.
I am in a number of bariatric groups and I see the conflict that some people deal with. Significant others not wanting their partner to get the surgery because of the lifestyle change it will mean for everyone in the family. It’s documented that there is a higher rate of divorce after a weight loss surgery.
I am so thankful I have the support of many around me.
