I'm About To Lose It Logo

An obese 50 year old guy takes the plunge into RNY gastric bypass surgery.

I’ve been struggling a bit lately. I don’t think I’m completely blowing it, and I’m still losing weight (although at a slower rate than previously), still getting my water and protein in, but it’s been a lot harder as far as the day-to-day struggles lately…especially with carby foods and snacks.

I have definitely gained an appetite back. It’s nothing like the old days (pre surgery) but I find myself hungry more, and fighting old food habits, including boredom eating. Even when I indulge, it’s about 1/6 of what I once would have…but I hate that I’m even doing it as much as I am. I feel like I’m snacking all the time.

In my last post I assumed I had crossed the 275 threshold, and I posted about it. But I didn’t. I hovered around 275.6…then one day I was 276 then one day up in the 277s. I stalled out and fluctuated around for over a week. A couple of days ago I had some stomach issues that may have cleared a bit out, then this morning I had some kind of weird stomach episode I haven’t experienced (severe cramps then nausea). If I had just eaten I would have thought it was a dumping episode, but I hadn’t eaten in 8 hours.

Either way, this morning I did finally cross the threshold and am just under 274. But it’s been a struggle.

One thing I hoped would happen is that there would be some foods that would either lose a taste for or would just make me nauseous, as I’d read had happened for others. I have seen where some people can no longer have sweets or rich foods, two of my big triggers. I guess you can attribute it to my “iron stomach” but not only does that stuff not bother me, but sometimes chicken makes me a little icky, but I can chase it with chocolate and no effect at all.

I thought I had exited the honeymoon phase around 3 months, then again around 5 months. I am now 10.5 months out and now I REALLY think I have. Some people never really have one, and for some people it lasts for a couple of years.

Not that I think anyone is really reading this blog, but I think I post a lot of the good stuff around this surgery, but I want to be real and also post the struggles. Lately there has been struggle.

I still have zero regrets about doing this.
