Yesterday was Thanksgiving here in the United States and I was a bit nervous going into it. At four weeks post-op, I’m still in the soft foods stage and worried about what I would eat, if it would agree with me, and, especially, if I’d eat too much. There was also a big FOMO fear….worried about what I would be missing out on. Usually at Thanksgiving I only have one plate of food and one plate of dessert but especially on food I load it up with carbs, carbs and more carbs.
I think my day was a complete success! You can see from the pictures what I started with and how much I ended up eating at our first of two meals. That plate is a LOT smaller than one I would normally get and it has about 1/6 of the food I’d normally get. Not shown are the 1.5 grapes and the bite of cheesecake I had that was literally about the size of a small green pea. I think I ate around 3 or 4 ounces of food total at our first meal. That is right in line with what I am supposed to be eating at a meal.
At our second meal a few hours later, I ate a few small bites off of my wife’s plate and that was all. All day I kept sipping on my water and when I did eat I kept proteins as my focus taking two bites to one of anything else.
A great thing was because I had such a small amount of food and eating small bites, I was able to really focus on what I was eating. I was able to taste the flavors of the food and appreciate them, not just shovel in huge mouthfuls of stuff.
I know I’m still in a bit of a “honeymoon” phase with my surgery. Most people lose the biggest amount of weight in the first 3 or so months after that surgery and also have the least amount of apatite in that time. But even so I feel like I not only kept my focus but I was able to enjoy what I DID eat.
It was a good day and a good non-scale victory. 🙂
