I'm About To Lose It Logo

An obese 50 year old guy takes the plunge into RNY gastric bypass surgery.

I tagged this post with just about every category tag I’ve got set up. It’s a little bit of everything. It’s a mish mash of both struggles and victories lately.

Down – In the last month I felt like I’ve slipped a lot in my health habits. Eating a bit more bad stuff. Overall, I’m still doing so much better than I used to, and not just in portions…but still I feel like slipped a lot.

Up – even though I’ve slipped some I do feel overall like I’m doing much, much better. More exercise, better food choices overall, better habits.

Down – Specifically, I’ve been eating more junk than I should. I could say there have been unusual circumstances, but I know ultimately, it’s still my choice. One day I had popcorn for lunch at the movies…just…popcorn. With butter. I suppose there are worse things but that’s pretty bad for this health journey.

Up – I’ve been doing more with my exercise and activity. I’ve taken advantage of a friend’s pool for summer swimmer, still going to the gym pretty regularly on Saturdays, doing more in the yard, etc. So much more active than in the past 10…15…20 years.

Down – This past week we were on vacation, and I really feel like I blew it food wise. Again, I could say it was just unusual circumstances, but I ate so much bad stuff.

Up – I blew it on vacation…but not totally. I still had my protein shake every morning. I still had much smaller portions and at least a couple of times opted for something healthier. I still tried to get plenty of water. So I did far from great…but far from terrible too. I also still got in plenty of exercise including getting up early 2 days to go walking on the beach.

Up? Down? – This one I’m not sure about. While on vacation we did a LOT of walking. A LOT. But we ate so much fried, sugary, carb filled junk I was just sure I had gained a good 5 to 7 pounds. I got home last night and weighed after a full day of food…and I had LOST weight. I guess that should make me happy, but knowing how bad I ate, it actually kind of worries me that I still lost weight. What happens when I get down to my desired weight and I am still losing? Will be asking the doc about that.

Up – One of the biggest NSV (non-scale victory) wins I’ve had…for the first time in the last 25 years I flew without a set belt extender. And had PLENTY of slack in the seatbelt. It was glorious and I was so proud of that.

Down – I’m kind of upset with myself on the poor food choices I’ve made, not just on our vacation last week, but over the last month or so. I feel like things I worked so hard for I’ve let slip. I’m still losing weight but could probably have lost more if I hadn’t eaten so bad.

Up – Overall I’m still losing so I guess that’s still a win.

Down – I know this is unavoidable but while I’m liking the weight loss, I’m not liking all the sagging. My stomach, arms, thighs, butt…all of them are saggy. I may need to up my exercise game to deal with this. At the start of this I said flatly that I wouldn’t ever get skin removal/plastics of any kind…but I will admit it crosses my mind more now than before. I’m not vain. I’m an ogre as it is anyway so I’m not going to win a beaty contest 🙂 but its annoying.

Down/Up – Overall my knees and back feel so much better. I walked so much on vacation. At the zoo. At the aquarium. On the beach. At the airports. Everywhere. Walking I couldn’t have dreamed of before. But the damage is indeed done and by the last day my knees were kinda screamy.

Anyway, that’s just some of the thoughts I’ve had lately.
