I'm About To Lose It Logo

An obese 50 year old guy takes the plunge into RNY gastric bypass surgery.

It was a good news/bad news day (but news I expected). I went to a local knee doctor back in 2015 when my left knee popped out of place several times. They looked at it, did X-rays and the whole bit and said “Lose weight. You are too big for surgery. Goodbye.”

I’ve had pretty bad knee problems for the last 10 years and I knew they were jacked up. But I know they’d just tell me to lose weight.

Went back to the doc today, same office, but new doc (old one retired). When I told him I’d lost 160 pounds (technically 159 as of this morning) so far he was completely excited and couldn’t get over it. He was nearly jumping up down with the weight loss even though I’d never seen him before.

So the bad news is I definitely need new knees. I kind of figured that. Bone on bone and several spurs. Primarily weight related but he said that about 20% of people have a certain knee shape that puts them at a higher likelihood of knee problems and I had that too. So I never stood a chance. 🙂

The good news is he was so stoked about my weight loss and said I can do the surgery whenever I’m ready. It’ll probably be early next year before I do the first one but I’m ready for it. He stressed that protein was gonna be my key factor in healing.
